- 수동태는 동작의 주체보다 동작의 대상을 강조하고 싶을 때 사용
- 동작의 주체를 모르거나 동작의 주체가 너무 분명해서 밝힐 필요가 없을 때 사용
Julie fixed the phone.
-> The phone was fixed. ( 주체생략 )
능동태와 수동태의 뉘앙스 차이
A. The man kicked my dog. 그 사람이 내 개를 찼다.
B. My dog was kicked by the man. 내 개가 그 남자에게 걷어 차였다
- 강조하고 싶은 뉘앙스가 능동태/수동태에 따라 각기 다르다.

Other minor details were changed.
수동태로 사용할 수 없는 동사가 존재함.
1) 자동사.

2) 상태·소유의 동사
I have a eraser.
시제, 조동사와 결합된 수동태
The office will be cleaned next week.

to부정사, 동명사와 결합한 수동태
to부정사의 수동태
to + be + V-ed
to + have + been + V-ed
These curtains need to be washed.

동명사의 수동태
being + V-ed
I hate being called a liar.
The boy was afraid of being punished.
목적어가 2개인 문장의 수동태
- 4형식 문장의 경우 목적어를 2개를 갖는다
- 사람(목적어1)을 주어로 하는 수동태로 만들 수도 있고
- 물건(목적어2)을 주어로 하는 수동태를 만들 수도 있다.
Students were shown photos of the four women.
Photos of the four women were shown to students.
This striped tie was bought for him by his wife.
(<- His wife bought him this striped tie.)
목적격보어가 있는 문장의 수동태
Visitors are required to show their ID.
He was found guilty.
사역동사가 쓰인 수동태
능동태에서는 동사원형을 사용했을지라도 수동태로 변환하면 to부정사(to V)를 사용한다.
I was made to change my plan.
The refugees were helped to adapt to their new environment.
지각동사가 쓰인 수동태
능동태에서는 동사원형을 사용했을지라도 수동태로 변환하면 to부정사(to V)를 사용한다.
The ground was felt to shake.
He was seen to leave the office.
